The final process made in preparation of your audio's delivery to manufacturing or digital aggregation. Not to be confused with mixing, mastering is the practice of taking 2 track mixes and using EQ, harmonic adjustments, compression, and phase correction among other techniques to prepare your audio for problem free mass production and digital distribution, as well as embedding the proper metadata in the files to ensure proper tracking by RIAA and other data analysts. Improper mastering could result in defective or problematic physical releases due to mechanical errors in production, as well as possible rejection from digital distributors due to noncompliance of technical industry standards, and worse yet potential missed income or missed charting opportunities due to improper data tracking. Consider mastering to be the icing on the cake. The cake that could potentially be paying your bills.
